Hosta

Hardy zones 2 to 9 in partial to full shade on moist, fertile, well drained soil.
Many Hostas will even thrive in the dense shade under large Arborvitaes.
The roots have been recorded to reach up to 5 feet in depth. Most Hostas form 2 gallon saleable size plants in 2 years. Hosta's may be propagated by dividing clumps in autumn as the foliage turns yellow and replanting them at the same depth. Hostas can be left alone for years and even decades, however very old clumps may become over crowded and loose vigor until they are divided. Fertilizing is best done during mid-autumn or early spring. Most Hostas are prone to slugs on some sites unless otherwise noted and are eaten by deer making careful siting important. Hostas with thick, waxy leaves tend to be the least appetizing for slugs. Slugs are also generally worse on the west coast where they are particularly large. Both slugs and voles are more likely to avoid Hostas mulched with a mulch of decorative gravel.
New Hosta cultivars tend to be very expensive however in generally most Hostas have become much more affordable in recent years due to micro-propagation ( tissue culture ) allowing mass reproduction.
