Daylily

Hemerocallis
A genus of long-lived, clump forming perennials, with glossy green, arching, strap-shaped leaves and colorful flowers borne on strong upright stalks during summer. Some of the dwarf varieties are good for outdoor containers, many are good for sunny borders and many of the repeat blooming varieties are good for groundcover on commercial plantings as well. Daylilies are excellent plants for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.
They thrive in full sun to partial shade on deep, moist, fertile, well drained loam ( preferrably mulched ). They are tough, easy to grow and rarely bothered by pests or disease though can become food for deer. Daylilies are tolerant of heat, drought, humidity, salt, excessive wind and fire. It is recommended to remove the old flowering stalks to promote foliage growth and additional flowering ( though only varieties noted below as reblooming will typically re-bloom ). It is also recommended to yank off dead and tired leaves after blooming to clean clumps and encourage new foliage growth. Fertilizing is recommended during spring and mid summer.
Well established Daylily clumps often grow so thick that few weeds even try to compete with them.
Propagation is from division which should only be done after 5 years ( division is rarely needed and usually done for propagation only ) and after the plant goes into dormancy during autumn. The divisions should then be planted at the same depth in a hole that is powdered with bonemeal which encourages root growth and establishment.
The best time to plant new plants is during spring before new growth begins.
Though this would often be considered a waste of a good garden plant; the tubers are edible and can be prepared and eaten in the same way as Potatoes. The tubers taste best if harvested during the cool season while dormant. They can either be eaten whole or with the skins removed before cooking. They can be eaten fresh or boiled in salted water. Some people are allergic to eating this plant, so it is recommended to try it in small quantities at first.
The flowers are edible and fading flowers can be salvaged for use in stir fries and soup.
