Hardy zones 3 to 8 in sun to partial shade on moist, fertile, humus-rich, well drained soil. Summer Phlox enjoys cool roots ( mulching helps ). To prevent powdery mildew costs, Summer Phlox should be watered deeply on the soil in the morning; do not water the foliage. Severely mildewed plants should be cut to the ground ( will then grow back with fresh foliage ). Thin the shoots if the clump is too dense, even limiting them to no more than 5 on mildew prone varieties to improve air circulation. Stem cab be cut back during early summer if a more compact, sturdy plant is desired, doing so may however slightly delay the blooming. Summer Phlox unfortunately is NOT resistant to deer. Propagation is from stem cuttings and division, is recommended to divide them every 3 years during autumn or early spring to maintain vigor.

For best summer appearance, the plants should be sheared back by about half after blooming. Hardy zones 2 to 8, tolerating as low as -40 F and prefers full sun to partial shade and fertile, moist, well drained soil. In the extreme heat of the Deep South; it definately has a preference for partial shade though is moderately drought tolerant. Deer do NOT eat Moss Phlox.
Plants can be sheared back in very early spring and another light shrearing after blooming will encourage dense luxuriant growth and often re-bloom.
These plants are easily reproduced from division which if done every other year actually helps maintain vigor.
