Echinacea

A small genus of perennials native to North America that are closely related to the Rudbeckias. Most of the Echinaceas look great with Amsonia hubrechtii, Liatris, Perovskias, Blue Salvia, Agastache 'Blue Fortune' and some Daylilies. The Coneflowers require lots of sun and well drained soil; they are very tolerant of both heat, drought ( prefers moist soil for 1st season ) and clay ( as long as the soil is well drained ). Echinaceas are also tolerant of salt, excessive wind and even fire. Clumps can be divided during autumn or early spring. They are not eaten by deer but are loved by hummingbirds and butterflies. Insect pests or disease problems are rare, leafspot and powdery mildew rarely occur. Deadheading faded blooms will extend the flowering season but will remove the seeds which are highly regarded as food by songbirds. Remove wet tree leaves in autumn, they can easily smother an Echinacea plant. Young plants can have the first flush of flowering stalks removed to encourage more branching at the base.
Root extract from the Echinacea is a known immune system stimulant. Echinacea is sometimes grown commercially for that purpose with it's extract sold in health food stores. Echinacea stimulates the production of white blood corpuscles and helps fight infectious diseases. It also has significant anti-viral properties helping fight flu. Too frequent use of Echinacea will decrease its effectiveness.
