Kirengeshoma palmata ( Yellow Waxbells )
A rhizomatous, clumping foliage perennial, up to 7 feet across that is native to mountain forests in southern Japan.
The opposite Maple-like leaves are toothed and lobed, up to 10 x 8 inches. The foliage is light green.
The nodding, tightly-tubular, 2 inch, bell-shaped yellow flowers are borne in gracefully drooping clusters on stalks up to 6 feet high in June and July.
Hardy zones 4 to 8 in partial shade to shade on deep, moist, fertile, acidic soil. These awesome tropical looking plants actually prefer cool wooded areas. Some of the best plants are seen in Vermont and in the Great Lakes. In ideal climates, the Yellow Waxbells remains healthy green even in September. It is long lived and also deer resistant. Can be slow to establish, clumps should not be divided for at least 3 years and it is better to cut from the edges leaving the center of the original clump intact.
