Japanese Red Bloodgrass

Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron'

A very attractive, perennial, ornamental Grass ( especially when backlit by the sun ) reaching up to 2 or 3 feet in height and an eventual width of 3 feet or more. Its blades, up to 2 feet in height are green towards the base turning to bright crimson red on the upper half. Typically the foliage remains that color for most of the growing season.
Hardy zones 5 to 9 preferring sun to partial shade on moist, well drained soil. It hates both wet, poorly drained clays as well as hot, dry soils. May also take some time to establish. It is effective planted singly in a rock garden near boulders or also in a landscape bed in groups of 3 or 5. Mixes well with blue flowering plants. It is NOT eaten by deer.
The parent species is not used as a landscape plant and is actually a noxious weed, reaching up to 4 feet in height and spreading to oblivion.
