Phygelius

Phygelius
A small genus of shrubby perennials that are part of the Scrophulariaceae ( Figwort ) family. Phygelius are among the best of all garden plants for attracting hummingbirds to the garden.
They are mostly hardy in zones 8 to 10 ( 7 on protected sites ) in full sun to partial shade, preferring moist soil but tolerating drought once established.
They may be evergreen and shrubby in very mild climates but are perennials elsewhere. Cut all freeze damaged growth to near the woody base during early spring and they regenerate rapidly. They are drought tolerant. Propagation is from suckers, softwood cuttings or seed for the species. Plant during spring only in cold climates in order to encourage full establishment before winter. Mulch roots deeply to protect roots before winter where severe winter weather is expected. Plants may be pinched as they grow during late spring and early summer to encourage denser habit in bloom. Excessive overhead watering ( ex. lawn sprinklers on sunny day ) may damage foliage.
